Radical Acceptance

Radical Acceptance is the acceptance of things as they actually are... This means that we detach ourselves from any wants or desires regarding our life situation and we participate fully in the process of our lives. Radical Acceptance likens itself to taking into account our past and present situation with an attitude that there is nothing going wrong (or right). We are so much a part of the present moment in a non-judging way that we free ourselves from our conceptions, old thought patterns and "attached" emotion. This allows our experience to be fresh and new, even when we don't like how we feel. Just because we accept something, doesn't mean that we don't do anything about our situation, that is resignation. Radical acceptance is allowing everything to be as it is and trusting that our unattached awareness will guide our decisions. This is not easy, but it truly is allowing the doing to come from our true being or essence.

In my counseling and therapy practice I believe that people are doing the best that they can. When peoples lives are taken in full context, we can find that there is nothing going wrong with are true essence. We have just either have been lost from our true selves and have become disconnected from who we are. Our past shapes our perceptions and our biology stores our memories, feeling states and habitual thought patterns. This process creates our mind and who we think we are. Our mind is only one aspect of the entire field of the present moment. The other five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell) along with our internal senses of interception and proprioception, provide awareness of our inside world apart from our mind. Through mindfulness, we can learn to access this field of awareness. This process can bring us closer to our true nature and in essence our true selves. The self that can see our mind for what it is and see that in life there is truly nothing going wrong. The journey here is not easy for most and yet with commitment and willingness, it is accessible to nearly everyone at anytime.
